A great passion of mine is rowing, and I was thrilled when I got the chance to design the 2016 season medals for Rowing WA. In past years, winners received a generic Rowing WA glass mug. For this season, the client wanted a series of medals which showed the regatta and the year. The WA regatta season includes four different types of competitions, with pennant and championship regattas for each. Each competition was to have a pennant and championship medal designed, with all the designs linking together as a family. The State Championship medal was to feel the most special of all. Using negative space and the WA colours of yellow and black, the designs were kept very clean and simple, using silhouettes to depict the sport. Different shapes were used to show the level of the regatta while the unnusual choice of a square medal was used for the State Championship medal to make it feel unique.
